Are courtroom seats reserved for members of the media? No. Courtroom seats are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at the courtroom door. Thus far, there have been seats available for all individuals who have wanted to attend hearings in this case. If this seating policy changes, the new policy will be posted on this page and distributed through the e-mail alert service for this case.
What court rules apply to all members of the media? All of the rules that govern members of the public attending the proceedings also govern members of the media. A complete list is on the attending the proceedings page. Among those rules the media should pay particular attention to are:
What court rules apply to the broadcast media? The court's Local Civil Rule 83.3 prohibits cameras and other recording devices inside the courthouse. The hearings will not be broadcast to the public. For hearings in this case, television news organizations have set up their cameras and a pool microphone stand for newsmaker interviews on the Granby Street sidewalk. Parking on Granby Street directly in front of the courthouse is by permit only. Microwave and satellite trucks generally park in metered public spaces across Granby Street and along York Street, which dead-ends into the front of the courthouse. Click here for a map of the courthouse area. If Mr. Hamdi were to attend a hearing in this case, his arrival and departure times would not be announced. If security measures are imposed for a hearing that further restrict the ability of broadcast media to operate near the courthouse, they will be posted on this page.
Is there a press room in the courthouse? No. Some reporters covering this case have filed from hotel rooms; a list of nearby hotels is available on this page of the court's web site. Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are prohibited in the courthouse. There are no lockers available to store these items while you visit the building. There is a pay telephone located in the 2nd floor snack bar, and one on both the 3rd and 4th floors near the elevators.
How can I purchase hearing transcripts? Transcripts can be purchased from Court Reporter Penny C. Wile: 757-222-7075. A list of the transcript rates is on this page of the court's web site.
How can I receive e-mail alerts about the case? You can receive an e-mail message whenever a pleading, order or opinion (except those filed under seal) is added to the District Court's Hamdi v. Rumsfeld docket page, and whenever a media advisory is issued in this case. To subscribe to this free service, please follow the instructions on the e-mail alerts page.
Who can I contact if I have a question? Contact the court's public information officer, Edward A. Adams, at 703-299-2172 or Edward_Adams@vaed.uscourts.gov.
