What court rules apply to all members of the media?

All of the rules that govern members of the public attending the proceedings also govern members of the media. A complete list is on the attending the proceedings page. Among those rules the media should pay particular attention to are:

  • All spectators must be seated 15 minutes before the start of hearings.

  • Visitors enter the courthouse through the building's main entrance on Granby Street. You will be required to walk though a magnetometer and your bags will be screened by an x-ray machine. You will be required to show a photo ID issued by a government agency, such as a driver's license.

  • For security reasons, you will not be allowed to enter the courthouse with cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), wireless e-mail devices, pagers, cameras, tape recorders, laptop computers or any other electronic device. There are no lockers available to store these items while you visit the building.

  • Spectators are not allowed to eat, drink, chew gum or read newspapers in the courtroom. Talking during the proceedings is prohibited.

What court rules apply to the broadcast media?

The court's Local Civil Rule 83.3 prohibits cameras and other recording devices inside the courthouse. The hearings will not be broadcast to the public.

For hearings in this case, television news organizations have set up their cameras and a pool microphone stand for newsmaker interviews on the Granby Street sidewalk. Parking on Granby Street directly in front of the courthouse is by permit only. Microwave and satellite trucks generally park in metered public spaces across Granby Street and along York Street, which dead-ends into the front of the courthouse. Click here for a map of the courthouse area.

If Mr. Hamdi were to attend a hearing in this case, his arrival and departure times would not be announced.

If security measures are imposed for a hearing that further restrict the ability of broadcast media to operate near the courthouse, they will be posted on this page.

Cell phones and other personal electronic devices are prohibited in the courthouse. There are no lockers available to store these items while you visit the building. There is a pay telephone located in the 2nd floor snack bar, and one on both the 3rd and 4th floors near the elevators.
